This time of year reminds me that anyone can be an artist (START NOW). To quote Claude Cahun, “When you have given up creating, the only thing left is to destroy; because no living creature can stand upright, immobile, on the wheel of fate.” The assemblages that occupy lawns at this time of year are far more creative and satisfying than during any other Collective American Holiday Experience. You can feel the subconscious, the shadow self, as viscous as ectoplasm, permeating the foggy orange air. We Americans love fear. Feeling it, inflicting it, ignoring it and letting it control us. I see fear as a mirror. Or, as my friend Eva puts it, “a window which is not yet fully open to the blinding light of being whole.” Fear is a window to walk through. Overcoming it is a chance to grow. To again quote Claude, “Under this mask, another mask. I will never be finished removing all these faces.”
