Last week I took a road trip to visit Asheville, NC.

I knew it was going to be a beautiful trip and the experience far surpassed expectations. My interest in going was piqued by my lovely friend Julianna, an artist, stylist, and all around deeply cool person in possession of a beautiful spirit.

She had sent me this video that ID magazine put together about their scene. It follows musician Moses Sumney and beautifully captures the spirit of the artistic community I met.

In that vid, you meet Honey, an entrepreneur, community organizer, self described art hoe, proprietor of an arts hub called Different World
and an incredibly generous host.

She opened her home to me and it was the perfect basecamp from which to take in the town.

I arrived on 4/20 which is my favorite national holiday. Unfortunately, cannabis is illegal in South Carolina.

Julianna worked on a cool publication which is filled with information and resources to bring awareness and advocacy to an overlooked region of our country that continues to be impacted by the harms of prohibition.

Of course, I had my own provisions and despite prohibition, so did all the locals.

On the way down to Asheville I stopped by Point Pleasant, WV, to visit a rather strange statue.

Mothman. A moth human hybrid with giant red eyes who was spotted by several people in the 1966-67. These sightings culminated in the 1967 Silver Bridge collapse during which 47 people perished.

Some people claim to have spotted Mothman that day hanging below the suspension bridge.

A harbinger of doom.

Thankfully on my trip, no doom was to be found, just sweetness...

…not to mention, a fuck ton of mullets, which is lovingly referred to as “the Asheville special.”

Before going to Asheville,
I was feeling sort of dense, a bit foggy.

Amongst the Rhododendrons, with beautiful people, on Cherokee land, built over the largest quartz deposit in the state of North Carolina, things began to crystalize.

I remembered the answer to all of
life’s curveballs. It is simple. Love.

The human heart is capable of infinite love.

It seems to me, the more love you extend,
the deeper love you are capable of receiving.

Which is cool because there are so many of
us to love on. We have a big job to do in taking care of this beautiful-motherly-space-rock
we all call home.
